Eco-friendly cleaning products
It can be a bit overwhelming trying to take on board all the information on each individual product, how it’s made, how it’s packaged etc. the list goes on and on. To ease stress and save you time we’ve researched some great eco-friendly cleaning products to help make the swap a little easier.
All these products are eco-friendly and vegan-friendly, and not tested on animals.
Iron & Velvet range
Iron & Velvet are a popular option for eco-cleaning. These water-soluble refill sachets can be used in any existing trigger spray you may have at home eliminating single-use bottles. They are made in the UK and have been developed using plant-derived, sustainably sourced active ingredients, as well as pure essential oils. This means up to 70% of Iron & Velvet’s products are fully natural ingredients.
You get 5 sachets of cleaning solution in a recyclable cardboard box with full instructions and stickers to mark your bottles. Cleaning solutions available include kitchen, bathroom, oven, glass, and floor, or you can purchase a mixed box.
You just dilute into some water!
Bio-D range
Bio-D is a hypoallergenic, environmentally responsible range of detergents that have a minimum impact on the ecosystem both in their use and in their manufacturing process. All products are made in the UK and not tested on animals. They use recycled and recyclable packaging.
They also sell large containers of the products, so you have the option to buy in bulk and refill your bottles as and when needed.
Wilko Eco Cleaner ‘It doesn’t cost the Earth’
For the lower end of the budget, Wilko offers an eco-cleaning range which is made from plant-derived ingredients and is packaged in recycled and recyclable bottles. It’s non-harmful to aquatic life, vegan-friendly and septic tank friendly.
Ocean Saver range
We love these refillable bottles and pods from Ocean Saver. You purchase the initial bottle of cleaning spray and when that runs out you can purchase pods that you dilute with water. The pods are £6.99 for a mixed pack of 5 making it about £1.40 each time you refill your bottle which we think is a great price. There are pods for the bathroom, kitchen, glass, multi-surface and floor.
They are free from parabens, mineral oils, microbeads, phthalates, triclosan, GMO ingredients, palm oil, animal testing and plastic. Made in the UK. Packaged in recyclable cardboard.
Bower Collective
Bower Collective have a range of eco-friendly refill cleaning products delivered straight to your door.
Your refill pouch arrives in the post and you simply empty the product into your chosen dispenser. When the pouch is empty, you then fold it up and store in the pre-paid postage return box (they advise collecting x4 pouches before returning). Once the box is ready to send, you simply pop it in a postbox or take to your nearest Post Office, whichever is easiest for you.
Bower Collective then steam and sterilise the empty pouches, and then refill them for repeat use.
Products are made in the UK, cruelty-free, vegan (aside from the products containing beeswax) ethically sourced and non-toxic.
Greenscents range
Greenscents is a Somerset based company who are committed to sustainable and ethical solutions to household products. They use quality organic and ethically sourced ingredients in all products, with fragrance from organic fair-trade essential oils. All Greenscents bottles are plastic-free, made from biopolymer plastics which are produced from the waste products from sugar cane. Their packaging is all recyclable and they also offer 5-litre containers to refill your bottles.
In 2017, research carried out by Ethical Consumer confirmed that Greenscents was the most ethical brand available in the UK for laundry liquid, washing up liquid and multi-surface sprays.
Try making your own eco-friendly cleaning products
If you want to go completely chemical-free, then try your hand at making your own cleaning spray. Mix white vinegar with equal parts water and add essential oil. Keep in an amber glass spray bottle to keep the product fresh and effective for longer.
As with any product swap it can be a bit daunting at first, especially when you can get bogged down in the detail or fear of the unknown. Just remember to take each choice at your own pace and don’t get stressed out. Each successful swap can make a positive difference to the environment. One footprint at a time.
